Historical Archaeology is a traditional dominant field of JLU’s archaeological discipline. The faculty consists of 8 professors, 1 associate professor, and 5 lecturers. At present, the faculty mainly focus on Archaeology in the Warring States Period, Qin and Han Dynasties, Wei, Jin, Sui and Tang Dynasties, Song, Yuan and Ming Dynasties, as well as Goguryeo and Bohai Archaeology, Ceramic Archaeology.

The faculty enjoys an international reputation in its education and research in Goguryeo and Bohai Archaeology. Its archaeology of northern border ethnic groups, Liao and Jin dynasties’ archaeology, and ceramic archaeology have distinctive characteristics. In recent years, the faculty has undertaken nearly 20 research projects, published nearly 30 academic works and representative papers. In regard to international communication, the JLU Historical Archaeology group has maintained extensive, in-depth communication and collaboration with many academic research institutions in Japan, South Korea, Russia, Mongolia and other countries, retaining influential and reputed in the academia at home and abroad.

The faculty presided over the investigation and excavation of many important sites, including the relics of the Balian City of Ancient Bohai, the Chunnabo Relics of the Liao and Jin Dynasties, the Changbai Mountain Temple Site of Jin Dynasty, and the Goguryeo-period city site in Jilin. The faculty has prominent contribution to the successful declaration of “Goguryeo Royal City, Emperor’s Tomb and Noble Tombs” as World Cultural Heritage.
