International Symposium on Ancient City Sites in Northeast Asia Held in Jilin University

On September 21-22, the International Symposium on Ancient City Sites in Northeast Asia, organized by the Research Centerfor Chinese Frontier Archaeology of Jilin University and co-sponsored by the Goguryeo Bohai Research Center of Jilin University and the Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology of Jilin Province, was held at Jilin University, with the participation of Mr. Zhao Hongwei, Vice President of Jilin University, Professor Kong Xigui from Hanbat National University, President of the Goguryeo Bohai Sea Society, Director of the School of Archaeology, and more than 50 experts and scholars from more than 20 universities and research institutes in China, Russia, South Korea, and Japan, as well as graduate students from Jilin University, the Institute of Archaeology of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Nanjing University and other domestic research institutes.

At the opening ceremony, Mr. Zhao Hongwei and Mr. Zhao Binfu, Dean of the School of Archaeology, delivered speeches welcoming the scholars from all over the world and looking forward to the success of this event in the field of historical archaeological research in Northeast Asia. In his speech, Prof. Kong Xigui expressed his expectations for the conference discussion.

The conference lasted for two days and 19 scholars made presentations. Professor Wei Cuncheng of Jilin University gave a presentation entitled "The planning and layout of the capital cities in the Central Plains during the Han and Tang dynasties and their relations with the neighboring regions". Researcher Li Xinquan of Liaoning Academy of Cultural Relics and Archaeology and Professor Choi Jong-taek of Korea University introduced new archaeological materials from China and South Korea, focusing on the history and culture of Goguryeo, Baekje and Silla periods. Prof. Kong Seok-goo and Prof. Yu Ho-gyu of Korea University of Foreign Studies gave an academic interpretation of ancient city sites on the Korean Peninsula from a historical perspective. Prof. Park Ah-rim of Sookmyung Women's University analyzed the concept of the city wall from the perspective of pictorial studies of Goguryeo mural tombs. Researchers Germann and Ivriyev of the Far East Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences and Eunguk Kim of the Korean Goguryeo Bohai Society introduced the results of archaeological excavations in the Primorye Territory of Russia in recent years, focusing on the history and culture of the Bohai Period and presented their academic views. Researchers from the Far East Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Artemyeva, Dong Xinlin from the Institute of Archaeology of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, and Zhao Yongjun from the Heilongjiang Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology introduced new archaeological discoveries about the history and culture of the Liao and Jin Dynasties. Researcher Hiroki Oda of Nara Cultural Properties, Japan, introduced the archaeological discoveries and research on Heijo-kyo, Japan. On the afternoon of September 22, scholars from four Northeast Asian countries carried out academic interaction.

In the evening of September 21, the conference held an academic salon on urban archaeology entitled "Theory, Methods and Practice of Capital Archaeology in the Han and Tang Dynasties".
